I used to think of "Personal development" or "Self Help" as the section of the book store or library where you could spot losers. (How embarrassing! I cannot believe I was so critical and close minded!) I apologize!
Thankfully, my views of the world have changed and I advocate Personal Development as much as possible! It's the PROACTIVE choice to become the best version of yourself. It's taking an honest look at yourself and identifying the areas where you could use a little guidance (whether it's leadership, time management, goal setting, listening, relationship building... it could be anything and everything).
One of the first books I read as a coach was: The Success Principles(TM) - 10th Anniversary Edition: How to Get from Where You Are to Where You Want to Be
Jack Canfield opened my eyes AND I love that he has so many different strategies for helping you set some goals... identify what you want in your life... and then actually put things in place to achieve it.
Admittedly, this book sat on my shelf for months. It's pretty large which can be intimidating... but hey- you don't have to read it all in one sitting.
I promise once you start, you will be a highlighting- circling- taking notes- inspired machine!
I created a GOAL BINDER. Basically, I clipped images from magazines and put them in those page protectors. I created a flip book for my DREAM life- everything from the type of house I wanted... the vacations I would take... the business goals I would achieve... financial goals... relationship goals... how I could impact my community...
Every night before bed, I would look through my DREAM binder before falling asleep and visualize my life as though I achieved it.
SADLY, during our cross-country move from Cali to Pittsburgh, the movers LOST it. Devastating and irreplaceable loss... but recently I came across some pictures I had of it...
And it's almost eerie... many of the things I wished and hoped for (in my wildest dreams) have become a reality!
Our brains are WIRED to be goal-seeking machines. When you give yourself a goal, your subconscious gets to work (day and night) on how to achieve it.
I want to share something with you in hopes that you will be inspired to create your own goal list...
Some goals can be achieved in a weekend (example: I want to go kayaking) while others may take years. It's good to create a list of several goals that you are actively working toward so you don't get discouraged when one of your goals doesn't happen quickly.
PLUS as you achieve smaller goals/successes, you get excited! There is no greater joy than accomplishing a goal and checking it off your list- it inspires you to keep reaching and working!
Create a list of 100 Life Goals
I'm in the process of crafting my LIFE LIST. The 100 goals I want to achieve in my life- and the cool thing is.. I know this list will grow and evolve over time.
The key to making a good list is...
-- Be specific. Include as many details as possible (ex: when they will happen, where, you can include model #s, exact amounts of $$$, etc...)
-- Be REAL! Don't think about what you think you should want (I'm guilty of doing this). Take some time to sit down and think about what YOU actually want (not what others tell you to strive for). I recommend doing a brain dump. Get out some paper and just start writing. For the first 20 min, you're prob writing what you think you should want... but after awhile... your true self comes out!
-- Make it Visible You could create a dream board, put your goals on notecards, put together a dream binder, write a blog post! ... whatever you decide...make it something you can look at often to visualize your goals coming true. The goal is to keep them on your mind.
-- Celebrate Every Success As your achieve goals (big or small), celebrate! Soak it in and really take a moment to enjoy every success!
-- Don't be afraid to dream BIG! Think little goals and expect little achievements. Think big goals and win big success. -David Joseph Schwartz
Jack Canfield says there are 7 areas you should set goals for:
