Slim Fast vs. Shakeology

Sunday, May 8, 2011

I thought I'd just give you a little information to help you along. I've seen a lot of questions floating around about various diet pills, exercise routines, shakes, drinks, equipment, etc. Many of those questions revolve around the ever infamous, but still intriguing "Slim Fast" diet shake.

The diet involves replacing two main meals with Slim-Fast products. Each day will also include one “Sensible Meal”, and fruit/vegetable snacks. A sensible meal is based around a lean protein (such as skinless chicken breast, or fish), carbohydrate (potato, rice, or whole wheat bread), and a large serving of vegetables.
Slim Fast appears as though it could be an effective weight loss regimen. However, there may be some concerns about the amount of sugar that is included in these products. These days manufacturers tend to put less sugar in products due to the crash and burn effects that it can have, especially when following a diet with such low caloric intake. Also, it may not be realistic to believe that this is a lifelong solution to weight loss due to the fact that someone simply may want to go their entire lives having to buy Slim Fast products in order to maintain their weight.

Here's a valid reason to avoid Slim-Fast: it’s junk. Look at this nutrition label:

This is supposed to be a meal replacement? It’s a soda with a little fat and protein thrown in. Okay, given the meals many people eat, I guess that would be a replacement, but you get the point.

Look at the ingredients list for the powdered version:
Sugar, High Oleic Sunflower Oil, Maltodextrin, Gum Arabic, Milk Protein Concentrate, Cellulose Gel, Soy Fiber, Buttermilk Powder, Potassium Phosphate, Xanthan Gum, Dextrose, Salt, Guar Gum, Soybean Lecithin, Artificial Flavor, Carrageenan, Sodium Phosphate, Acesulfame Potassium (A Non Nutritive Sweetner) and Aspartame.

Sugar is listed first. That means it’s the primary ingredient — ingredients are listed in order of their proportion in the product, if you didn’t already know. Not surprisingly, the nutrition website where I found the label gives Slim-Fast an “A” for nutrition. It’s low fat in fat and cholesterol, you see.

Not too great, eh? Yeah. I can feel that strung out crash feeling from the low caloires-high sugars, now. Gross.

But you REALLY want a Shake, right? One that's healthy, will help you achieve your goals and will leave you feeling energized, thin and happy. Yeah? Ok. Here's my recommendation:

Shakeology is made up of essential amino acids, vitamins and minerals that work together to curb cravings, reduce hunger and keep you feeling fuller for longer. It is loaded with anti-oxidants and phytonutrients which help eliminate toxins and shed stored fat.

The digestive enzymes and prebiotics in Shakeology's proprietary blend work in an incredible way. Shakeology can help reduce bad cholesterol, reduce oxidative stress and even eliminate build up toxins from highly processed foods that have become stored in your system over time.

Shakeology is the ultimate in meal replacement shake or snack. Shakeology’s 20 different antioxidants not only give you the best meal of the day but also has a lasting impact on your health. It can reduce free radical damage that can lead to heart attack, high blood pressure and stroke, all in one easy meal. With two delicious flavors that can be combined with your favorite fruits, veggies and many other creative combinations, this is a revolutionary new way to get healthy, lose weight and feel incredible.

But don't take my word for it. Here are the Facts:

Bottom Line: 70 Ingredients. 40 servings of Fruits and Vegetables in each shake. 140 calories, 1g Fat, 17g Protein, 9g Sugar.

Program: Replace 1 meal a day with a Shakeology Shake (Availabe in Chocolate & Greenberry) and exercise 3 days a week for 30 minutes.

Results: Weight Loss, Energy, Health.
